ADIOS, MOTHERFUCKER COCKTAIL RECIPE

Last edited on July 29, 2023

The first thing that anyone thinks about when you talk about this drink is obviously its great name. Some people half-ass it when ordering it from a bar, ordering an "AMF" or "Adios MF", but I don't see any point dancing around the word. We all know what you're ordering, motherfucker.

If you don't know this drink, you might know its cousin, the Long Island Iced Tea. These drinks are so similar that the Adios, Motherfucker is also known in some places as the "Blue Long Island Iced Tea".

elegant adios motherfucker (AMF) cocktail in a tall glass with lemon wheel garnish, in soft sunlight

Ingredients

  • ½ Ounce Vodka
  • ½ Ounce Rum
  • ½ Ounce Tequila
  • ½ Ounce Gin
  • ½ Ounce Blue Curaçao
  • 2 Ounces Sweet-And-Sour Mix
  • 1 Ounce Sprite (to top up)
  • 1 Lime Wheel (garnish)

Method

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice.
  2. Add the vodka, rum, gin, tequila, blue curaçao, and sweet-and-sour mix.
  3. Stir to mix and chill the drink.
  4. Top up the drink with Sprite, and garnish with a lemon wheel.
  5. Enjoy your Adios, Motherfucker!

Recipe Tips

  • Store-bought sweet-and-sour mix can be pretty average, so you can make your own: Boil equal parts water and sugar to make simple syrup. Then, shake 1 part simple syrup and 1 part lemon or lime juice to make your sweet-and-sour mix. This will definitely taste better than store-bought mix, and doesn't have the extra additives either!

  • For an extra-boozy drink, use 1 ounce of each of the spirits, keeping the rest of the quantities the same.

  • This drink is basically the same as the Long Island Iced Tea, except you swap out the Triple Sec and Coke for your Blue Curaçao and Sprite.

What's In An Adios MF?

An Adios, Motherfucker (AMF drink) is a boozy cocktail made with 4 different spirits: vodka, gin, tequila, and rum. These are followed up by Blue Curaçao, sweet and sour mix, and Sprite. The result is a sexy, strong, sweet, and sour drink which will leave you tipsy and refreshed. Please drink responsibly, because this drink is very easy to down, and very, very boozy.

Best Vodka For An Adios, Motherfucker

Because the AMF has such a long list of different ingredients and flavors, it's best to choose a smooth, neutral base. The most important quality you're looking for here is the smoothness of the vodka. You can go cheap, but if you want the best Adios, Motherfucker, go for some Belvedere or Grey Goose.

Best Rum For An Adios MF

Similar to the vodka, you want a relatively neutral white rum here. Anything like Bacardi Superior will do well in this drink.

Best Tequila For An Adios MF

Use a white tequila in this cocktail. It's okay to go cheap here, but not too cheap. This is because cheap tequila is extremely harsh, and it'll leave you with a nasty hangover the next day. Espolòn Blanco Tequila will serve you well, since it's high quality for the price point.

Best Gin For An Adios MF

Again, the sheer amount of different spirits and flavors going on here will mean that this is very much a background ingredient. Use any London Dry Gin for the AMF.

History

The exact origin of the "Adios, Motherfucker" is somewhat hazy, much like the experience of drinking one! What is known is that it became popular in the bar scene during the 1980s as part of the trend for colorful, powerful cocktails.

It's likely a spin-off from the popular Long Island Iced Tea, substituting only a few ingredients to get to the AMF. The name supposedly comes from the idea that this is what the bartender will say to you after you've downed a couple of these boozy drinks.

With its unforgettable name and potent mix of ingredients, it quickly gained fame (or notoriety) and remains a popular choice for those looking to kick their party up a notch. It's a cocktail that definitely lives up to its name, making a memorable impression wherever it goes.
